Hi Hi Copenhagen
Hi hi means goodbye in Danish...isn't that reason enough to dig Copenhagen?
Scandinavia has always occupied the ho-hum section of my imaginings, but I was pleasantly surprised.
3 days was just about right to run around the grand city, which may not be Europe's most exciting capital, but it's certainly one of the most livable.
And that despite the piddly weather. No good for biking unfortunately, but we didn't let that phase us.
We saw plenty -- from the charming Little Mermaid (I don't care what everyone says, she's NOT disappointing!) to Gavin DeGraw singing free at the Tivoli.
Got back in to Brussels a couple of hours ago to catch the once every 2 years, 48 hour phenomenon of the flower carpet on the Grand Place. Lovely!
Should hit the sack if I'm to get to Brugges tomorrow. Yes. I'm stark raving mad. But since I have no idea what the future holds and so can't bargain on ever being back in Belgium, gotta make hay while the sun shines...or doesn't shine in this case.
Also, keep in mind that I live like a prisoner in Afghanistan then you may understand this self-destructive urge to keep on trying to see and do it all.
My Best of Copenhagen:
#Cool design. Of course. But really, everything from the dinky luggage trollies in the airport to the fab chairs everywhere. The Dansk Design Centre was fun too.
#Tivoli is the un-tackiest amusement park in the world. It's enchanting and on the night we went both Beck and Gavin were playing (yes, I'd prefer to see Beck too, but his concert cost and we were a bit too late :( )
#Walking along the canals and waterfront. Dazzling light. So that's where the painters got it from! Not the Danish painters, there's a reason you haven't heard of any of them, more like the Flemish/Dutch masters.
#I dig the sensuous curves of the Black Diamond (it's a library!)
#Christiana. You can oggle real live hippies at rest and at play in their very own free-state/commune, as well as the only non-whites in Scandinavia (well just about) -- Greenlanders.
#Clean lines. Old and new seamlessly hanging out together on the same block -- twizzly spires and shiny glass facades. It's all so easy on the eye.
As for Brussels:
Not love at first sight, but it certainly grows on one!
Will be sad to say goodbye.
Really have to crash!!!
Will upload photos once I'm home. Leaving for SA via hairy Heathrow (no hand luggage at all?!) tomorrow night.
PS. The pic is of me at Nyhavn in Copenhagen. The sun showed her face for a moment. And we were glad :)

I can't wait... 12 more days!
Here's to continued safe travels!
