Embrace the awkward: World Mental Health Day
A year ago I wrote this post when I could barely breathe:
Hot Tips on World Mental Health Day (or things to do instead of suicide).
One of the things about growing older is that a year whirls around in the blink of an eye. This year the WHO has called for #40seconds to help those suffering from suicidal ideation or those who live in the wake of losing someone to suicide.
It took me more than 40 years to publicly admit to both -- on what would have been my brother's 40th birthday I wrote this tribute to him and the fierce struggle to stay alive.
Today I'm okay.
In this moment I give thanks for that and know that this too shall pass.
The way is spiral.
If you're not okay, embrace the awkward -- have a difficult conversation that might save your life or someone else's.
Growth lies outside of our comfort zone, reaching out is the hardest thing ever when you're in a prison of isolation. But it is possible to reconnect. Not easy, but possible.
And you know what, comes a day when you can see the colours again, smell the sweet air and feel okay about being here now.
Promise.
