Just Breathe

It's always interesting to witness this higgeldy piggeldy learning curve called life. Particularly during a historical moment such as this.
Today we've been locked down in South Africa for 10 days thanks to the global coronavirus pandemic.

The shock, panic, anxiety, sorrow and fear have come in waves. In between there have been more bearable moments.

Yesterday my daughter and I embarked on Heartwing Studio's #21daysofart challenge.
How enlivening to see these four walls, that have often felt like a prison even prior to these exceptional times, with fresh eyes.

To be alive in our senses is one of the best ways to access our truth.
Which is quite possibly The Meaning of Life.

Another great help in these dark days has been Dance!
Petra has been offering an hour of pure bliss several times a week and I'm so grateful.

The challenge of getting my kids going with their homeschooling and maintaining domestic order while everyone's home ALL the time has been significant. I've managed to keep up with work but only barely while often feeling very 'absent.'

It's a state of mind I recognise from having weathered Grief, PTSD and severe Depression. Going through the motions while feeling completely numb and disconnected.
To the point where my usual joys or escapes (movies & books primarily) cannot hold me.
Although I have a feeling that might be because Netflix & Chill isn't what's required of us right now.

When you see how many have died and how many still suffer it's obvious that we are a globe undergoing severe trauma.
Family Portrait in the time of COVID-19
Simultaneously, if you are blessed to have a secure home, enough of the creature comforts, it really is an opportunity, or rather an invitation that cannot be denied, to go within.

How to Help Others: https://www.facebook.com/GoFlow42/posts/765336780660426

I joined with Unify for hours and hours of beautiful teachings that stretched through the night, culminating in our Global Meditation at 4:45am this morning. What a gift to sit in the stillness of pre-dawn. To remember, yet again, that the only thing we can do with this precious life is return home to ourselves. Gently. Patiently. With ever increasing kindness. There are many ways to meditate, but ultimately we're here to learn that our Minds can serve us, by reminding us simply:
"Softer. Kinder. More Compassion."

Since we're Alone Together in what is an unprecedented moment in History, I'm pushing myself out of my comfort zone and offering more and more through digital channels.

Tonight at 6pm SAST I will offer a Flow session free on my Flow Facebook Group through Facebook Live.

Please join us. The idea is to offer these regularly at different times to include more of our little planet's populace across time zones though under the same moon, even if it's day.
My hope is that these sessions will help us come home to ourselves.

Here is a 30 min Yoga class I recorded last Sunday in a desire to reach out and help others who might be struggling to muster up calm or who need to move their bodies. Or just remember how to breathe. Lest we forget, this is an illness that robs us of that staff of life...the breath. Our best guide and tool. So breathe deep.

#hipopener #yoga  This is a simple 4min sequence for working into your hips.  If you’re experiencing discomfort in your hips it could be related to fear about moving forward. As you gently work with your body be open to receiving & willing to relinquish old patterns.  1. Butterfly pose 🦋 I press the acupuncture point in the centre of the foot (Kidney 1) 3X breathing in as I press and exhaling as I release. Move forward from the hips, lengthening. You can rest your forehead on two fists, especially if you have high blood pressure.  2. Roll up slowly, lift knees and extend the legs away from you out of the hips. This is parambhik sithi. Working with the breath flex & point the toes. Then rotate into the ankles first in one direction then the other. Take your time. Breathe. Listen to your body & notice.  3. Use your right hand to lift up your right knee. We are going to cradle the lower leg, placing the foot in the crook of the left elbow and the knee in the other arm. Rock the baby with great tenderness. Remember intention is everything. Perhaps sing yourself a lullaby. Soothe.  4. Placing the right foot on the left thigh, cradle the knee in the right hand and gently lift towards your torso and push away. You can work slowly with the breath 3X. Place the foot on the ground. Flex your foot and push away from you.  5. Rock the baby on the left side.  6. Half butterfly on the left.  7. Parambhik sithi - shake the legs out  8. Rock n roll, holding the big toes, ankles are crossed, gently & playfully rock backwards and forwards. Make sure you have enough padding between you and the floor.  9. Cross your right ankle over your left thigh and squeeze your thigh towards your torso. Breathe. Let go. See how soft you can become.  10. Repeat on the left side.  11. Cross your right thigh over your left and hug your shins towards you.  12. Repeat on the left.  13. Finish with the soles of the feet together, knees out to the sides. Hands in diamond seal - thumbs touching above belly button and pointer fingers touching below the navel. Rest.  Music: Heart Sutra by Wah! https://open.spotify.com/track/4hFNM4nIL4Ht5aLodHzjal?si=61paVyNmSQeM7RaTMCRCSg

This is a series of helpful asana and techniques that I use almost daily to release tension, increase flexibility and above all practice metta.

There is more than one road back to ourselves.
I've tried so many. I hope that some of these might prove helpful.

10 Days Vipassana Retreat was tough and these 10 days of Lockdown have been challenging too.
I haven't always liked what I've seen in me. One night lying in an agony of anxiety, I remembered (again) that the problem lies not in the suffering but in the reaction to it. Instead of fighting the waves of anguish, I surrendered.

The thing is, even when you're convinced you'll die, the reality is simply liberation.

Much love to you all wherever you may find yourself in(ner) space.
